One of those reasons is that they’ve confounded the (white) power structure in the US with their meteoric rise. Hell, you could switch their roles & Michelle could be the Senator-turned-Prez-in-under-a-decade! Both exude the capabilities to lead. It takes a strong (aka attractive, sexy, etc) woman to allow her equally capable husband to take the helm & a strong man to do so in a manner that compliments them both.

Mebh, just watched it 5 minutes ago. I don’t think he hates black women. I actually thought white women were trashed. He simply perpetuated the myth of the domineering black woman which I don’t think many black women would want to focus energy to fight against. His comments about black men willing to date Rosie O’Donnell and there not being an equivalent scenario for black women are true. I wish he acknowledged that black men may see dating white woman as not just an issue of variety but about elevating one’s status.

Also, there is the stereotype that black couples, much like gay and lesbian couples, have a greater likelihood of forging a more egalitarian (in terms of power) romantic relationship. Again, probably due to the myth of the black woman or even the myth of the weak, white woman who needs protection. I do stress that it is a myth because black women can be in abusive relationships but I would be curious about the proportion. When Hilary actually did political work as the First Lady, everyone called her a ball-breaker, opportunist. If Michelle should do political work, I bet few would bat an eye. She would just be being self-preserving and self-sufficient (my goodness, Barack could end up in jail or leave her for Christie Brinkley).
