I haven’t been posting here for a while. I’ve been more preoccupied with my career so I have been posting on my other blog when I can squeeze the time.
But I have had so many blog posts in my head for fashionablecouple, I don’t know where to begin. There are book reviews, movie reviews and neighbourhood updates. There are conversation with my little girl that have made my head spin. However, I don’t have that much time tonight. I’ll touch on two things only.
1. The reason I felt compelled to write something, anything – MilkandCoco.ca. I won’t even link to them because they have annoyed me so. Just being part of a mixed race couple does not make you inherently interesting. Particularly if you are in Toronto. They have nothing to say. No thoughts. No insight. But you can buy hotsauce on their site. And yes, they have posted Halloween photos where they both wear afro wigs. My hair is the punchline. Yet again. He should know better.
Blogs are only worth the bandwith if there is a point. Any point. Opinion. Perspective. A bloody recipe. Just something.
As a result of my complete annoyance at this blog, I have opened this blog up to fashionablecouple friends who have much to say about identity, culture and relationships. See their recent posts below. I’ll introduce them eventually.
2. Heard an interesting segment on CBC’s Here and Now regarding a dance performance that took place last month. Can’t find the audio for it at the moment but I found an article on thestar.com. The show was called Samvad. This quote made me go “hmmm”:
Now, as younger generations of artists, born in Canada from immigrant backgrounds, seek their own voices, Pada believes they are more hybrid than hyphenated.
“The notion of multiculturalism is perhaps not quite relevant any more, at least in Toronto. We have such incredible crossovers of cultural traditions and expression.”
“more hybrid than hyphenated” – worth thinking about. I could analyze cultural identity as it is often expressed in Toronto using a Mendelian genetics model. I’ll stew on it and write later.
[Thank you Ju. Thank you, D]
